SOIL is off to a great start with Stockholm World Water Week! Yesterday, Sasha Kramer, presented on targeted sanitation subsidies alongside the Aquaya research institute. SOIL has kept our sanitation service affordable for a large share of Cap-Haïtien's population, but the monthly installation and maintenance costs (~$6 and ~$3, respectively) remain a barrier for the lowest-income households.

Achieving community-wide sanitation coverage — and the health benefits that come with it — requires targeted service discounts to ensure that the poorest households, historically excluded from sanitation interventions, are not left behind.

Our Research team is currently piloting sanitation discounts for 60 households in partnership with the Haitian Water and Sanitation authority and with funding support from The Swedish Postcode Lottery Foundation.

“SOIL is tackling a complex challenge with a practical and innovative approach. We are proud to support SOIL’s efforts to develop solutions that can help more families gain access to safe sanitation services.” - Emilia Hellqvist, Project Manager at the Swedish Postcode Lottery Foundation

This pilot will help us understand what level of subsidy is needed to keep families on sanitation services despite difficult financial hardship.

We're looking forward to the seeing more partners and collaborators throughout the rest of the week!
