Projects

Ecological Sanitation

Ecological sanitation is a low-cost approach to sanitation where human wastes are composted and recycled for use in agriculture. This approach is currently practiced in communities throughout the world, particularly in Africa and Asia, and has the potential to provide inexpensive and safe sanitation, improve public health, reduce environmental pollution, enhance agricultural yields and create livelihood opportunities. SOIL is currently promoting several pilot ecological sanitation projects in rural Haiti.

Technology Centers

Technology Centers are decentralized meeting places that empower people to engage in creative problem solving. They work to develop, investigate, promote, and evaluate simple technologies for improving health, protecting the environment, and encouraging economic independence. SOIL is currently working in collaboration with two technology centers in northern Haiti.

Educational Resources

SOIL is working in collaboration with the Hesperian Foundation in Berkeley California, teachers from the Ecole Nationale du Bordes in Milot, and the Palo Alto Rotary Club to translate to Haitian Kreyol a pair of books put out by the Hesperian Foundation in Berkeley. These books address environmental health, with a focus on water and sanitation and are part of the compilation A Community Guide to Environmental Health.
