Educational Materials

A key component of the public demonstration projects is education, and one of the most valuable resources that this project has is a pair of books put out by the Hesperian Foundation in Berkeley that address environmental health, with a focus on water and sanitation. The two books are part of the compilation A Community Guide to Environmental Health.  With the support of the Palo Alto Rotary Club, SOIL was able to work with teachers from the schools in Milot to translate both the sanitation and water books to Haitian Kreyol. These books will be distributed in the schools where the demonstration toilets are being constructed and will be a critical part of the educational arm of this project.

Community sanitation guide

The book Sanitation and Cleanliness for a Healthy Environment offers basic information and learning activities to help communities understand and prevent sanitation-related health problems. The booklet includes instructions for building several kinds of latrines, as well as ecological sanitation solutions. This book was written and published by the Hesperian Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme. This book has been translated to Haitian Kreyol by teachers from the Ecole Nationale du Bordes and the Kreyol version will soon be published in paperback and available on the website of Hesperian Foundation. The English, French and Spanish versions of the book are available for free download on the Hesperian website.

Community Water Guide

The book Water for life: Community Water Security helps communities improve drinking water sources, treat water to make it safe for drinking, and organize water projects. This book has been translated by teachers in Milot and is now being typed up by SOIL volunteers. We anticipate that it will be published in Haitian Kreyol in Autumn 2006. The English, French and Spanish versions are available for free download on the Hesperian website.
