A Conversation With SOIL Board Member: Johnny Celestin
SOIL recently had the opportunity to have a conversation with SOIL Board Member Johnny Celestin, an advocate for social justice and community empowerment. Throughout the conversation we explored his journey, values, and vision for fostering sustainable development in Haiti. With a diverse background spanning philanthropy, government service, and grassroots initiatives, Johnny shared his perspectives on the critical work being undertaken by organizations like SOIL to uplift communities and drive positive change.
Johnny immigrated from Haiti to Florida at the age of sixteen where he worked at a variety of jobs in local restaurants and supermarkets. After completing high school, he studied business at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY and then went on to pursue his Master's degree at New School University in NYC where he studied human rights and international affairs.
From private consulting to philanthropy, Johnny’s professional trajectory was guided by a steadfast commitment to social justice and human rights. His varied experiences eventually led him to his current role at the New York City Mayor's Office of Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs), where he champions policies supporting marginalized communities.
Recalling his initial encounter with SOIL post-2010 earthquake in Haiti, Johnny shared his journey of engagement with diaspora organizations seeking to contribute to Haiti's recovery efforts. "As part of the work that I was doing, we created a number of diaspora organizations, post-earthquake to do work in Haiti," Johnny explained. "And in that process, I got connected to SOIL. And of course, you know, who meets Sasha and doesn't fall in love with her, right?" he said playfully. "I thought she was doing really, really interesting work."
Despite initial encounters with the organization being sporadic, Johnny's involvement with SOIL deepened when the organization faced challenges with its NGO registration process in Haiti. "We stayed connected on and off but I was not directly involved with the work that SOIL was doing until they were going through the process of registration," Johnny explained. This registration process was complex and time-consuming, involving approvals from multiple ministries and government officials. Johnny's role at the Ministry of Planning uniquely positioned him to assist with this endeavor.
Through this collaborative effort, Johnny not only facilitated SOIL's registration but also developed a deeper understanding of the organization's mission and values. This experience solidified Johnny's connection with SOIL and ultimately led to his invitation to join SOIL's board years later.
Amidst discussions about Haiti's development needs, particularly in the realm of public health, Johnny underscored the crucial role of organizations like SOIL. "[SOIL is] one of the, if not the only organization in Haiti that is working on an issue of strategic interests for the country, particularly as it relates to health," Johnny emphasized. He elaborated on the dire need for initiatives targeting sanitation, especially in a country like Haiti, where access to proper sanitation infrastructure is limited. Aligning SOIL's mission with his personal values, Johnny stressed the organization’s unwavering commitment to social justice. He noted, "SOIL prioritizes staff welfare and empowers local communities," underscoring the importance of addressing fundamental issues like sanitation for societal development and individual dignity.
As a changemaker invested in Haiti's future, Johnny envisions a country where peace and prosperity prevail. He advocates for systemic change, emphasizing grassroots initiatives and community-driven solutions to drive long-term progress.
Looking ahead, Johnny emphasized the importance of innovation and scalability for SOIL's future impact. He sees SOIL as a catalyst for economic empowerment, leveraging its social enterprise model to create opportunities for marginalized communities across Haiti.
